Thousands of “emails from the University of East Anglia webmail server” — a top climate research center in the United Kingdom — “were hacked recently” and dumped on a Russian web server. Global warming deniers are sifting through the illegally obtained letters of private correspondence for “proof” that the scientific consensus on climate change is actually a global conspiracy.
— “If you own any shares in alternative energy companies I should start dumping them NOW,” says the Telegraph’s James Delingpole.
– Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey claims the emails discuss “repetitive, false data of higher temperatures.”
– The National Review’s Chris Horner salivates, “The blue-dress moment may have arrived.”
– “The crimes revealed in the e-mails promise to be the global warming scandal of the century,” blares Michelle Malkin.
– The Australia Herald-Sun’s Andrew Bolt claims the emails are “proof of a conspiracy which is one of the largest, most extraordinary and most disgraceful in moderrn [sic] science.”
Evidently due to this e-mail conspiracy, Arctic sea ice is at historically low levels, Australia is on fire, the northern United Kingdom is underwater, and the world’s glaciers are disappearing. Oh yeah, and it’s the hottest decade in history.
I don't know how you get from some scientist having sexed up a graph in East Anglia ten years ago to The Final Nail In The Coffin of Anthropogenic Global Warming. Anyone who comes to that connection has more screws loose than the Space Shuttle Challenger. And yet that's literally what some of these bloggers are saying!
You guys are so busted =)
November 20th, 2009 at 6:00 pmmonitorclimatechange.blogspot.com
All of the so called ‘facts’ which you claim are evidence of AGW are actually INTEPRETATIONS of data by scientists. i.e. glaciers can melt for many reasons. The claim that it must be CO2 is a interpretation of scientists. The email trails show that the major players climate science are a pretty untrustworthy group of people which calls into questions all of their interpretations of data.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:12 pmLast 10 years warmest in history? How did Greenland get it’s name? Did’nt the Vikings set up shop there at one time and grow their own food because the climate was extremely pleaseant compared to today’s? Did’nt they jump ship because the climate cooled off and Greenland was no longer ‘Green’?
Re: Australia and the Northern U.K. There has always been hot and there has always been floods. Just like there has always been snow falling in places where it normally does’nt snow (i.e. Bagdad).
Record lows are still being set, just as record highs are still being set.
The Arctic ice has been recovering since it’s all time low in 2007 and is well on its way back to ‘normal’.
A month back all of Canada was experiencing a cool, wet summer. Now the fall has been unusually warm.
Whistler has just set a November snowfall record. It currently has 9 feet of snow on the ground, and it’s only November 20th! Precipitation has been extremely high and the freezing levels have been extremely low. All ski resorts in Western Canada are opening weeks ahead of schedule. This was not supposed to happen during this El Nino year.
We do not have all the answers and smacking someone upside the head with statitics and anecdotal evidence does nothing to further one’s argument.
We are not as powerful and influential as we’d like to think.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:48 pmWe do need to clean up our mess, but what happens to Mother Earth is primarily the result of forces far beyond our control.
Dave: with respect to the Arctic sea ice, I really, really wish it were so. But sadly, you’re completely and utterly wrong.

November 20th, 2009 at 8:12 pmI don’t know how you get from some scientist having sexed up a graph in East Anglia ten years ago to The Final Nail In The Coffin of Anthropogenic Global Warming.
That’s because you’re dealing with the Cult of Denial, Mr. Silver. They seized on a bunch of emails without knowing what any of the terminology meant, and these became the death knell for AGW because … well just because, that’s why.
You can’t expect these people to think rationally.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:19 pm.
Dave: with respect to the Arctic sea ice, I really, really wish it were so. But sadly, you’re completely and utterly wrong.
No, that’s because ’sea ice extent’ measures only a “younger, thinner ice sheet” than it was in 1979, which is why George Will seized on this number to lie about climate science.
Using sea ice extent is like talking about prussian blue among holocaust deniers: knock it off.
More hacks, more morons. It’s the only thing that keeps this “debate” going.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:25 pm.
Man you either got some big ole brass ones or you are ready to be institutionalized to write that headline. It’s diametrically opposed to what the truth is. Wow.
When you have to be that dishonest to push your ideology/agenda does it never give you pause? If not, I must assume you to be a criminal or sociopath.
Good luck with that.
November 20th, 2009 at 11:08 pmActually, Dave, Greenland was called ‘Greenland’ not because it was green and pleasant, but they were looking to trap people into coming over to a frigid hell. On the otherhand, Iceland was accurately name, and look at it today…!
November 20th, 2009 at 11:58 pmDave neglects anything east of the BC border. 15C today, and lawns are still green.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:00 amBrad: I doubt you could be dumber if you tried. The graph shows Artic sea ice increasing dramatically over five months’ time. This is not a refutal of global warming; rather, it is a little-known phenomenon we in the scientific community like to call “winter”. If you look at the graph, it shows clearly that, while 2009 has seen more ice than 2007, both are well below the 1979-2000 average. Wow. That’s like if I included a picture of the Ross Ice Shelf in a brochure for “Visit Antarctica’s Tropical Beaches!”. Your evidence completely disproved your point.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:09 amFUCK! DELETE LAST COMMENT, PLEASE, MOD! I’m afraid I misread Dave’s post that Brad’s post referenced.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:11 amTo Brad:
Since I must be reading your graph wrong – the one that shows an upward moving direction relating to the increase in the amount of sea ice – please explain how posting an upward moving graph disproves what Dave said: “The Arctic ice has been recovering since it’s all time low in 2007 and is well on its way back to ‘normal’.”
November 21st, 2009 at 12:48 amSo our inactivist friends Raven and Dave are responded to this Huge ClimateGate Scandal by repeating the same old talking points that inactivists have been repeating?
If there’s any proof that there’s no scandal, this has to be it.

November 21st, 2009 at 4:01 amAh Dave. And why should 15% ice be the fascinating threshold? For indeed, glaciers calving rapidly into the sea have a way of spreading ice far and wide…the world’s navies are completing historical first navigations of the Arctic Sea … But don’t tell Dave! Ice increases!
If my gin-and-tonic is dashed to the floor, the extent of 15% ice also increases…Dave’s advice is to continue sipping.
November 21st, 2009 at 8:03 amAch moderator kill that crap above kthx
too many gin and tonics to keep attribution straight
November 21st, 2009 at 8:06 amOh God, that was funny.
November 21st, 2009 at 10:30 amFinally the end of green! Spread the word, this is our chance to make sure everybody knows Al Gore pulled Global Warming out of his ass to make money! Hurry, text everybody you know! Global Warming was a farce and that farce is over!
November 21st, 2009 at 10:47 amWhat a wonderful day for humanity !
The hoax is over, the kids can go back to playing and stop worrying about the polar bears and the criminals who brought this scam upon the world will now be put on trial. The “green” movement was hijacked by socialist progressives and used as a weapon to scare the world into their “vision” of behavior and tax us into oblivion. Now it is over and the revolt back to common sense is on ! Yeah !!
With all the time, money and effort wasted on AGW, we could have really done some good in the world. Wake-up everyone, time to use that energy on real problems…
November 21st, 2009 at 11:22 amMan-made global warming is not a hoax. It’s a scientific theory, and one that is still under active research. It’s the most likely explanation for temperature rise in the last 30 years, but it is hardly proven or “settled”. The emails themselves contain many quiet admissions of this: http://bishophill.squarespace.com/blog/2009/11/20/climate-cuttings-33.html
November 21st, 2009 at 2:30 pmThis is only the latest scandal. Turns out most of those 2500 IPCC climate ‘experts’ expertise were in other fields and some even disagreed with the Summary Report and couldn’t get their names off of it. Then there was chatter about having to ‘leave out’ the Medieval Warm Period to have their data make any sense. Which was done in some later publications…. Let’s see, they haven’t proven one iota that Global Warming is man made. (In fact the data before human industrialization implies natural causes.) Observation shows ice at the South Pole now at high levels, despite whatever the Arctic is doing. And the last decade was either stable or cooler than average. So, except for it NOT being man made, NOT being global, and NOT warming; they got it right. This has all been a Marxist/Luddite pipe dream to cripple Capitalism, economic growth, standard of living, and transfer wealth to the ‘have-nots’. Not to mention giving Al Gore millions of dollars to fly his private jets, eat his steak dinners, and heat his mansions. The biggest, most expensive hoax in modern history.
November 21st, 2009 at 3:30 pmPS: I would add that someone who said “GW was just a Scientific Theory and is still being tested” has no concept what a Scientific Theory is. It’s NOT just some idea how things MIGHT work, but a rigorous procedure of observation, testing, peer review. modification, and replication of THE mechanism which BEST explains what is happening and adheres to the Scientific Method. Something I have repeatedly said about the Theory of Evolution to folks who think their religion just another “Theory” too. The comparison can’t me more apt, for to continue clinging to man made GW IS religion, NOT Science. Climate change is what the Earth does and why 98% of all species are now extinct. Get over it.
November 21st, 2009 at 3:48 pmThey were Enron-ing the data.
Maybe that’s why Salon had that article up the other day about scientists being “baffled” by cooling temperatures.
Well, maybe because you were deceived by Enron-style manipulation of the data.
November 21st, 2009 at 3:50 pmSea ice shmea ice. The artic has added ice in the last while as we have experience the global cooling for 10 years as admitted in the hadley hacked e-mails. Antarctic ice has grow substantially over both periods. Maybe we will be overun with ice? Sound the alarms.
Every anecdotable piece of evidence cited by alarmists is either false,Like polar bears disapearing while they are at record numbers a natural process or information presented so it looks bad like the sea ice garbage.
The facts remain and are now buttressed by the REAL opinions of IPCC climate scientists that global warming is unproven, requires more study and the problems sceptics have raised are of great concern to the validity of Global warming.
It was much warmer in the past and less than 1/2 degree of warming is not worth living in a mud hut freezing in the dark, while I’m sending all my money over to europe to build windpowered solar panels. I would need some actual proof in the absence of fraudulent scientists. get back to me when you have done the research, have the proof and have it presented by scientists who are not of the Enron and madoff Ilk.
November 22nd, 2009 at 1:59 ammarwick,
The article in Salon is nonsense. Here’s the graph of global average temperatures:
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/img/climate/research/global-jan-dec-error-bar-pg.gif
Where is the “plateau” in temperatures since 1998?
November 22nd, 2009 at 9:59 amEven if you believe the CO2 theory, what good is paying a carbon credit to a company owned by Al Gore going to do?
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:12 amTo attempt to educate a few posters here, AGW is not a “theory:. A “theory” is an accepted “hypothesis”. AGW is clearly NOT an accepted “hypothesis”, hence the current debate. Therefore, AGW is still only a “hypothesis”, which by definition is an educated guess, based on observation. Yes, AGW is still very much in the guessing stage.
To perhaps the surprise of some here, there has never been shown a demonstrable link between changes in atmospheric CO2 concentrations and global temperature. No direct correlation, no proxy correlation, no magic feedback mechanism.
To address the Arctic sea ice extent issue, it is true that sea ice extent has been recovering. It is also fact that Arctic sea ice extent is most largely driven by ocean currents and wind patterns, not by temperature (minor effect).
Antarctic ice is at an all time record high at this point.
To address you 1998 flat or declining temperature, I suggest you not refer to that pathetic NOAA chart and plot your own directly from NOAA’s own website here (try using Period=Year To Date, First Year=1998, you will see a decline of -1.05 degF / Decade).
Perhaps you should pay more attention to the actual data from all sources here (plot your own series and see for yourself). In all cases, I believe you will find that temperatures have indeed flat-lined and are falling since 1998 (which by the way, was not the hottest, 1934 was).
If you read through the ClimateGate emails and code, you will find several excerpts whereby Phil Jones himself admits to the fact that temperatures have been declining.
My advise to everyone, if one is going to have an opinion on this topic, please please, do a little bit of your own homework and quit listening to the media and con artists such as Al Gore and company. They have an agenda! And not an agenda that you are likely to agree with.
November 23rd, 2009 at 1:59 amTerminal Denial on display. The most damning revelation was the complete exposure of the myth of peer review and the role played by the gatekeepers to keep dissenting opinion out of scientific journals.
November 23rd, 2009 at 12:21 pm“Admitted”?
Cite please.
November 23rd, 2009 at 2:37 pmThe most damning revelation of your ignorance was bringing up this very point, which demonstrates that you know absolutely nothing about the subject.
Not that anyone is surprised.
November 23rd, 2009 at 2:40 pm1934 was the hottest year on record … in the lower 48 United States …
… which is less than 2% of the earth’s surface.
So, once you have reviewed what “global” means, try again.
BTW: 2005 was the hottest year on record … idiot.
November 23rd, 2009 at 2:42 pmMethinks thou dost protest too much JM.
You are the type that covers his eyes and ears and screams “NO! No! Its not true”, “It can’t be true”
You are trying to save your sinking Titanic with a teaspoon JM.
Give it up and do the world a favor.
November 23rd, 2009 at 6:50 pmA brief sentence from the incriminating emails. I found this one by hardly looking. How come you cannot seem to find any JM??
“”I can’t see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report. K and I will keep them out somehow – even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is !!”"
November 23rd, 2009 at 7:06 pmThis thing is a FRAUD monsanto is making suicide seeds, the drug companies are doping the heck out of the kids, there is depleted uranium all over the middle east- THERE ARE REAL PROBLEMS, but these CON ARTISTS WHO LITERALLY FUNDED HITLER [COLD SPRINGS HARBOR] are trying to TAX AIR what we EXHALE and what plants INHALE! the government is doing LIVE FIRE EXCERCISES off the whole coast of the US and the economy is in the TOILET we dont even have industry all the pollutors have moved to the third world, ROCKEFELLER=OIL–>DONATED LAND FOR UNITED NATIONS TO SIT ON–>IPCC<-UN BODY- BP-SHELL & THE CROWNED HEADS OF EUROPE–own carbon trading bodies, world banks == they get feudalism

these people arent liberal i used to be its hard to think they were lying all this time, i voted for gore i thought he was good, he was a bad man he let bush get in so bush could do all this damage, bush could have killed us all, if gore was good he would have fought, kerry is bush's cousin he is bad too these men are laughing at us, they think its funny, go to the ipcc website, look at the data, it only goes back a few decades, if you go back hundreds of years you can see that the earth has a heartbeat that is in tune with the sun, its beautiful, it might freeze us to death tho which sux but it may not since we will be up to our ears in polar bears who have fur colbert is right, bears are dangerous!
November 24th, 2009 at 2:22 amCLIMATE CHANGE IS NOTHING COMPARED TO LIGHT-BULB CHANGE
The first few jokes in this file are by ahrvid@hotmail.com. Feel free to add your own and share the fun with others!
Question: How many Climategate deniers does it take to change a light bulb? (Q repeated for every answer)
What light bulb? The EU has banned them for environmental reasons.
None. Media prefers to stumble around in the dark.
Thirty. Because when you’ve done you need a whole platoon to dig trenches and put up barbed wire to defend your position to the very last man.
2501. That’s the number in the Intergovernmental Panel of Light-bulb Change. 2451 of them are only formally members and couldn’t care less, though everyone flies their jet planes to expensive international conferences to get pisssed and allow their names to be used in several thousand pages thick reports, sure to lay substantial areas of forests barren. There are about 50 that sit and cherry-pick the light bulbs that are suited for “the cause”. Of these only about a dozen check that the correct light bulb – and only the correct light bulb – is selected. Finally Al Gore climbs to the very top of the ladder and make sure that everything becomes totally screwed up.
What a bloody bickering about light bulbs! We will not change light bulbs. The light-bulb science is settled once and for all. You’re only a gang of conspiracy theorists that deny the Holocaust, think the US Government blew up the Twin Towers and see Flying Saucers in the sky.
None. because you can use the trick of hiding the decline in luminosity.
What’s a ”light bulb”? We only have camp fires, where we come from, and are almost freezing to death. Oh, how we long for Medieval times! It’s supposed to have been a Warm Period then.
It will be impossible to change any light bulbs. You see, even if we here on the BBC are about 23 000 employees, every single one of us is fully occupied with making new programmes where we repeat the same old message about “climate change”, day out and day in. That’s public service TV for you!
Changing a light bulb, you said? I’m from the government and I’m here to help you. Of course you have to pay the light-bulb tax, the electricity tax and of course the CO2 tax, not to forget the climate-change fee, the environment duty and the fossil-fuel charge. What? Well, mortgage your house, for heaven’s sake! Think of the poor panda bears, please. First we must make sure that the light bulb complies with regulation 4.71, paragraph B) in sub section…

November 24th, 2009 at 7:51 amSubject: Annoying idiot wants scientific openness
Howdy amigo!
I got this outrageous E-mail by some idiot that wants to check our light-bulb figures. If I see him I promise you I’ll beat the crap out of him. Suggest that you immediately delete everything. Chris will do the same. We can’t have others coming and checking our light bulbs. Scientific scrutiny and freedom of information in my ass! I propose that we gang up and oust this annoying man from everything. BTW, I attached the latest version of our program code, with should fix the travesty about that the increase simply hasn’t happened.
–Mike
Ps. Send the money in chunks below 10 000 dollars, so authorities won’t find them, though I know that’s a heck of a job for the 100 billion of tax-payer’s money we have gotten so far.
Ah yes, those terrible climate scientists, conspiring to take money and power from the poor, poor oil and coal companies.
November 24th, 2009 at 8:24 amOr maybe I just can’t stand a lying sack of shit.
Wow! I’ve already linked to a story that explains that controversy. It was big news at the time. What? You don’t remember?
Idiot.
November 24th, 2009 at 11:18 amLOL!! JM; your resorting to ad hominem attacks betrays your
cornered rat status!
You guys are busted, get used to it, those days of wine and roses are over, take your ill gotten gains and creep off into some insignificant corner and enjoy yourself. cheers; HDT
November 24th, 2009 at 12:49 pmThere is no such thing as Global Warming caused by human beings by burning gasoline or using energy — for all of you gullible people out there – it is a way for the government to gain COMMIE control of every aspect of your life, without calling it Communism. Already in England there are sensors on peoples garbage cans of how much garbage they throw away and if they go over a certain limit, they are fined MONEY!! You need to follow the money — that is what is gained MONEY and POWER to control. For the masses to believe on what the government tells you and some so called Climate Experts tell you, is pretty sad. To believe that MAN is able to control the weather, you must think you are GODS!!! Think about the coming GLOBAL TAX, it is about redistribution of wealth, the same old, same old Marxist, Leninist, Mao’s Communist Manifesto dreams coming true — these criminals at the top want your money and control. Do you people get it yet?
November 24th, 2009 at 3:04 pmWow…AL E. Gore`(say it real fast – allegory) ought to be one of the fist one to get skwewered! The whole time he has been the biggest hypocrite of all, telling the rest of us how we should live, yet no doing it himself (I live in TN and I know how he lives).
The fact that these wackos are liars is not lost on people who have a brain and can think for themselves. Every single one of these fabricators needs to be stripped of their title and made to pay restitution to the rest of America who has had to pay for their lies by paying more for products and goods, higher taxes, less jobs in America becasue the regulations on businesses based on false information caused an untold amount of job loss to overseas.
Why hasn’t our president come out an denounced this fraud? Because he is also complicit in it is all that I can think. They lie and act as though nothing has happened and this is HUGE news, yet they choose to ignore it – wonder why?
November 24th, 2009 at 3:24 pmWith little due respect to Dave. (ie #3) “Greenland” wasn’t ever a “green land”! It was named that to send others there by mistake thinking they would indeed find some “green” land! Know you’re history before you come here to play with the big boys!
But there is one thing you are right about. Humans can not have any effect on the climate of this planet. None! there is far too much “real” scientific evidence that I’m right!
November 24th, 2009 at 4:58 pmHonestly, I’m having trouble separating the comments from conspiracy theorists from comments satirizing the conspiracy theorists.
Do people actually believe the world governments — including the Bush administration — have been duped and controlled for the past several decades by a cabal of physicists and a man who couldn’t even hold onto the presidency even though he got more votes?
Weird.
November 24th, 2009 at 5:47 pmThe climate debate has for several years been more about politics than science. Fact is, predicting climate change is well beyond the grasp of current science. Obviously, the impact of CO2 has been vastly overplayed, and the most decisive factor, the geopulsation cycle, has not even been cranked into the formulas. (See Roots of Cataclysm, Algora Publ.NY2009)
November 24th, 2009 at 10:06 pmWhy is it that right wingers are always yelling?
November 24th, 2009 at 11:38 pmThe revelations contained in the climate documents are evidence of many crimes. i.e. wire fraud, conversion, racketeering, treason, criminal fraud, extortion, conspiracy, piracy, grand larceny, bribery,…just to name a few. All of the “scientists” and politicians involved, work for various governments. We know the United States Government, Inc., and the British Government, Inc. routinely lies to the people. What is so damning, is that these climate documents reveal that they are reflections of the overall policies of all the “governments” on every level. We cannot trust our “governments” to tell us the truth about anything. Time for the revolution. Viva la Revolution!!!
November 25th, 2009 at 12:13 amWell, im gonna sit back and watch for a while, but one should take into consideration that if an email server were hacked they could upload false information before downloading it or even send spoofed emails thru the server which the server kept copies of.
November 25th, 2009 at 5:58 pmI call BS
November 25th, 2009 at 5:59 pmAs someone who believes climate change due to mankind’s raising of concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is genuinely a major concern for Earth’s future, I am appalled that some of those who share my views believe that falsification of data is an appropriate tool of persuasion.
Global warming is a legitimate concern, and I find it appalling that some prominent people in the global warming movement have conducted themselves in a way that plays right into the hands of those who claim that global warming is no cause for concern.
November 25th, 2009 at 7:16 pmWow
For clarification:
Can all the nutters end their tirade with “SERIOUSLY!”
And all the satirists end theirs with “BWA HA HA!”
Thanks
November 25th, 2009 at 11:46 pmFollow the money. Don’t these guys get lots and lots of grant money. Come on if they did’nt spice things up they could’nt apply and get all the millions of dollars in grant money for their projects. This would’nt be the first time a scientist has “fudged” his or her reports in order to get the money.
November 26th, 2009 at 1:31 amIt’s a lucrative scam not only for the individual but for governments as well.
Goodness! The right are excited about this storm in a teacup aren’t they! Cheeky buggers. And I just love this notion that someone resorts to ad homs (perfectly valid argumental strategy) only if you are backed into a corner (looking at you, Thoreau) It’s especially amusing since the right’s discourse seems to consist of nothing but ad homs (I wonder if they know what they are). Hey any of you believers in anthropogenic global warming out there received your compliment of wine and roses yet. I haven’t, dammit! I must be due some graft for my support!
November 26th, 2009 at 9:21 amDave…please don’t spread your crazy on bhealf of all canadians. I live in Saskatchewan which is typically one of the coldest (lower) provinces in Canada. As I write this on November 26th, we still have no snow and our temperature has yet to drop below -5. We are way above normal temperatures for this time of year and reports show no sign of dropping to normal levels in the days/weeks ahead. I can’t remember a winter this nice since th big El Nino in 98 when it was + temperatures right up until Christmas.
Now, anyone who knows ANYTHING about climate science will tell you that regional temperatures mean nothing when it comes to GLOBAL warming. However, even if we are to assume YOUR logic that regional temperatures mean EVERYTHING…then I think Saskatchewan having unusually warm weather counteracts your claim that BC has 9 feet of snow (which I highly doubt since a simple google search checking the weather says it is still + temperatures).
Snow is not a measure of coldness but of precipitation. The case can easily be made that more snow is the result of more precipitation…which is caused by HEAT and evaporation moving inland. FURTHER, the very small number of reports looking at how Global Warming will affect the prairies all say the same thing…the impact will be felt more in the winter months than the summer months and temperature increases will be more common in winter months than spring/summer.
Those reports further PREDICT, spring/summer in the prairies will see less total rainfall, but more “rain events”. Or, to interpret for someone who clearly knows NOTHING about climate science…more cool, cloudy, wet days that don’t actually deliver a lot of rain. Those studies are from a few years ago, but guess what has happened the last TWO years? Very few really warm days (which is odd) because there are way more cloudy, grey, gloomy days that are damp but never seem to drop any REAL rain which the farmers need.
But sure…keep cherry picking to fit your predetermined ignorance on the actual impacts of Global Warming. Ignore the fact that these regional reports have turned out to be right. Ignore the fact that what the IPCC report was PREDICTING would happen by 2020 is actually happening right NOW (as recently reported). All that MUST be fake and made up because 10 – years ago someone used the word “trick” in an e-mail.
Maybe read the actual science and the actual REPORTS. I have. And the funny thing I find is that all the denier “reports”, aside from having ZERO peer review, don’t actually make any claims. They just spend all their time mudslinging and trying to debunk the other, peer-review reports. They also spend a disproportionate amount of time name calling (ie. “alamist”, “Cult”, etc.) and simply referring to other denier reports (which refer to other denier reports) as evidence. the denier side would seem like MUCH less of an ignorant joke if they had actual science and data and evidence backing them as opposed to name calling and reports that confuse name dropping the same two or three debunked reports over and over and over (and over).
November 26th, 2009 at 11:14 am@lance sjogren
While I agree with your second point, let’s be honest here…these were PRIVATE e-mails between collegues. If someone were to hack into every e-mail you’ve ever written, and take things out of context, would YOU look any better? I frankly doubt it.
However, there was ZERO evidence of falsification of data. Just because someone claimed to use a “trick”, it doesn’t mean deception. I work in communications and work mainly with professional correspondence. I routinely use “tricks” to edit documents and present data in a way that is easy to understand. That doesn’t mean the data is false, distorted or that the document is lying. It means I have ways of editing that typically HELP to make the documents more readable.
Meanwhile, if I recall my highschool and university science classes correctly, there is ALWAYS cases where you have a set of data that show a clear trend, but for some reason, one or two points may be off. It is an important part of science to LOOK at those “off” data points and find out why they don’t fit the trend and if that is an error or not. If using a better “ruler” will provide better measurements or data…then that is a “trick” that will change the data in a way that makes it MORE accurate, not less and/or distorted. And what I find especially hypocritical is all these deniers who claim to care so much about the truth and yet clearly do NOT read the very reports they claim are filled with lies and distortions. Those reports would have the data and mention how it was used, as well as sources, to back up its claims. Surely that is much more reliable evidence than illegally stealing personal e-mails, taking comments out of context, and acting like that is PROOF of something.
November 26th, 2009 at 11:26 amOne robin does not a spring make. The day President Kennedy was shot we were enjoying t-shirt weather north of +40º latitude.
Take a look at the recent lack of expected sunspot activity for a clue to the temperature fluctuations.
A big problem being pushed aside by this criminal scam is the need to get control of the handling of toxic substances and the proper handling of waste material of all types.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also described as the Eastern Garbage Patch or the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a gyre of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean located roughly between 135° to 155°W and 35° to 42°N and estimated to be twice the size of Texas
November 26th, 2009 at 11:42 amFYI, Australia is not “on fire”.
There are no more fires than usual at this time and of the ones that there are, most were started by people.
November 26th, 2009 at 6:29 pmDave: It’s really simple. If you are correct, what will have happened? A lot of money would have been spent…….we spend lots of money on war and I do not here you complaining.
On the other hand, if Global Warming is happening, then we have the problems being mulled over. Nothing if you are correct and EVERYTHING if Global Warming is real. You would take the chance? Yes, just as your reasoning is off, so your actions would be wrong. Joe C.
November 26th, 2009 at 10:50 pmThe story of it being just clever advertising is widely told and believed, but it is a myth. At the time that Greenland was discovered, the Earth was a bit warmer and southern Greenland actually had green meadows and could sustain villages of Norse settlers and their cattle, sheep, goats, horses, etc. The name was actually an accurate description of the land at the time.
Since that time the Earth had cooled down some and the ice sheets advanced, forcing the Norse settlers out again.
A similar history befell the early Norse settlers to “Vineland” (North America). When they arrived the weather was warm enough to grow grapes. Ultimately global cooling drove the Norsemen back to Greenland and then Iceland. The colony in iceland was well established by that time and survived.
November 27th, 2009 at 12:00 amFirst, the reference to the decade being the “warmest in history” is inaccurate. The article clearly says “in RECORDED history.” That means since the time that temperatures have been recorded. So references to Greenland really don’t enter into it. But if you want to bring that into it, then don’t forget the little ice age that occurred during the time of our own American Revolution. These cycles have existed and continue to do so. What the science shows is a known correlation between the mean earth temperature and the industrial revolution, and the time since then.
November 27th, 2009 at 12:42 pmWe’ve been on a gradual uphill climb as more and more greenhouse gases are pumped into the atmosphere. The conclusion drawn by scientists all over the world is valid, but is still under study. When you hear hoofbeats, don’t look for a zebra. When there is a known correlation in data, the simplest answer is to say that there most likely is a connection. Then you study that connection.
Let’s also not forget that Fmr Pres Bush’s team changed data in releasing their report on global warming. If the data actually showed that warming was a hoax, why was it necessary to change data to prove their side of the debate?
