Inhofe Calls For Criminal Investigation Into Why EPA ‘Suppressed’ A Global Warming Denier

This morning, Fox News Channel’s Gregg Jarrett introduced a “very big story” that the Environmental Protection Agency “intentionally buried a study challenging some of Uncle Sam’s global warming research.” Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) claimed the report, written by economist Alan Carlin of EPA’s National Center for Environmental Economics, vindicates his belief that man-made global warming is the “greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people”:

The thing is phony. I feel so good about being redeemed after all of these years, because they have been throwing this thing in my face since 1998 when we realized that all of those scientists that Al Gore had lined up — and I’m talking about Claude Allegre in France, David Bellamy in UK, and Nir Shaviv in Israel — all of them used to be on his side. They all said, “Wait a minute, this science is not right.” That’s exactly what Allen Carlin said. We’ve already started a investigation.

Watch it:

When asked if there should be a criminal investigation, Inhofe replied, “There could be and there probably should be.” Continuing his attack, he claimed that the EPA “have been suppressing science and coming out with what they want people to say. You might remember — I talked to you about it on this station. When I first realized that this thing was a hoax and I made the statement that the notion that man-made gases, anthropogenic gases, CO2 cause global warming, it is probably the greatest hoax ever perpetrated.”

In reality, what Fox News, Inhofe, and right-wing bloggers are promoting as a suppressed EPA report is nothing of the kind. Carlin’s paper, released by the Competitive Enterprise Institute (”CO2: they call it pollution, we call it Life“), is a hodgepodge of widely discredited pseudoscience. Carlin was given permission by the NCEE to cobble the paper together even though he is not a climate researcher, and “the document he submitted was reviewed by his peers and agency scientists.”

The Carlin document cites the usual array of global warming deniers, including Joe D’Aleo, Don Easterbrook, William Gray, Christopher Monckton, Fred Singer, and Roy Spencer — all of whom worked with Sen. Inhofe’s former aide Marc Morano to disseminate denials of climate science. Carlin’s references come from denier blogs such as ICECAP.us and Watts Up With That, as well as publications from the Heartland Institute, the Science & Environmental Policy Project, and the Friends of Science Society, all conservative front groups. RealClimate’s Gavin Schmidt summarizes the paper as “a ragbag collection of un-peer reviewed web pages, an unhealthy dose of sunstroke, a dash of astrology and more cherries than you can poke a cocktail stick at.”

Similarly, although the 76-year-old botanist David Bellamy, 72-year-old geochemist Claude Allegre, and 32-year-old astrophysicist Nir Shaviv publicly question man-made global warming, they represent a steadily dwindling number of scientists, few of any of which actively study climate change, that argue fossil fuel emissions are not warming the planet.

What’s really shocking, however, is that “the CEI press release was reported with a more or less straight face by at least two media outlets, CBS News and New York Times Greenwire, without any questioning of CEI’s own motivations or role in the affair.” Both stories show the effect of the collapsing of the mainstream media industry — the CBS story is crossposted by CNet.com reporter Declan McCullagh, the libertarian who fabricated the “Al Gore invented the Internet” story. And the New York Times story is crossposted from E&E News, an independent subscription news service.

I hate to break to you but nothing our changing our views but as we get the truth out more and more people will come out against the dems and Obama. One congressman got calls on the climate bill 6 for 1000 against!!! We are fighting back. We had enough of HOPELESSNESS and CHANGE!!

  2. Mike Kaulbars Says:

    @ John

    nothing our changing our views

Obviously facts and reality have no effect.

  3. David Brown Says:

So The EPA withheld information. What makes you think they are experts anyhow. There is enough WORLD

  4. David Brown Says:

    There is enough WORLD

  5. David Brown Says:

There is enough WORLD evidence to indicate that Global Warming exists and is real! So, why does anyone want to risk/debate/call it a hoax, that it is not real, that how our actions/inactions will significantly affect the lives of our children/grand children?
What selfish people think only about their own lives, money, power,righteousness…..and not about the future.

    Many, I see!

Joe Rohm describes the policy side of this story…

Memo to media: When the EPA ignores internal non-expert comments filled with falsehoods cut-and-paste from anti-science deniers, that isn’t “suppressing a report.” And why have you completely ignored a major scientific report revealing what a sham that “EPA report” is?
    http://climateprogress.org/2009/06/30/epa-suppressed-report-endangerment-alan-carlin-cbs/

“Well, this “report” was actually first just “proposed comments” and then actual “Comments on the Draft Technical Support Documents for Endangerment Analysis for Greenhouse Gas Emissions under the Clean Air.”

“I worked in a federal agency for five years. Lots of internal people provide comments on draft documents. Some of it’s good, some of it’s irrelevant, and some is outright disinformation — typically the latter is from holdovers from a previous administration. In this case, it actually looks like the comments were

    -Unadulterated and long-debunked disinformation
-From someone unqualified on the subject they are writing
-Cut and paste from a blog without attribution
-Delivered too late and not actually germane

“Such comments should not be incorporated into an official government document — certainly not without a serious inquiry first. …”

“You can read a thorough debunking of these “comments” at the RealClimate Post, “Bubkes.” …”

John, unfortunately fighting back you only for against decent grammar. Head to remedial, please.

  8. bob ashworth Says:

Inhofe is correct. Brad you say CO2 causing global warming is a hoax, well that was what the suppressed report showed! What fuzzy logic are you using here. It is a complete hoax and in my opinion Madoff’s Ponzi scheme is childs play compared to the Global Warming Scam!!!

  9. Nell Says:

Isn’t it amazing? All the responsible governments and reputable scientists are warning that global warming could end the world as we know it… and are therefore perpetrating the greatest hoax mankind has ever known.
    Or not.
Perhaps while we’re at debunking centuries old facts (which are based on solid physics) we should also reopen the debate about whether the earth is flat, the moon is made of cheese and storks deliver babies.

“the CEI press release was reported with a more or less straight face by at least two media outlets, CBS News and New York Times Greenwire, without any questioning of CEI’s own motivations or role in the affair.”

Yep. But who are you quoting there?

  11. Hank Roberts Says:

Ah, I found it. Good source too, this is the guy who discovered that chunks of “Carlin’s” report had been copied and pasted from an industry/PR-science sites as though they were facts.

  12. LB Says:

Most people, unintentionally and without being aware of it, seem to think that history begins and ends with their lifetimes. Because of this, they are easily convinced that climate change is happening NOW. Of course, climate change has been happening since whatever power you may believe or not believe in started it all. And so it will continue. We, collectively, cannot really have much effect globally. Three/tenths of the earth is land mass, and only a small percentage of that land is inhabited. The rest of the world basically takes care of itself. Some have an overinflated opinion of themselves if they think they are making much of a difference. And, by the way, there are more polar bears now than anytime since humans have been counting.

  13. zamia Says:

Science requires a filtering method, as even qualified and responsible scientists go off the track on occasion. When I was a government official I ’suppressed’ 2 or 3 pieces of utter gibberish. It is not a fun task, since
you have to wade through dreck to identify significant errors.
It’s not usual in a government agency to have a less-than-useful guy.
Sometimes these guys get a burst of energy and spit out a pile. Then
he screams his supervisor is picking on him to everyone who will listen.
I’d be curious to know if Carlin is this kind. His comments are so derivative
and nonsensical I have a hard time imagining him do constructive work. JMO
In any event, it is not EPA’s mission to do climate science, NASA and NOAA,
do that. For that reason alone, supervisors would not be happy with an
employee who wanders off the reservation.
Reading between the lines, it sounds like his supervisors were fed up
with him. Stringent directions as to what to work on usually are
attempts to deal with problem employees. And those were written
    before ’somebody’ leaked to CEI!
This is no way compares to suppressing actual data measuring the global
yearly temperature. Or refusing to launch a satellite (DSCOVR/Trina) that
would have showed decisively the earth’s albedo declining, i.e., more
    sunlight being absorbed.

  14. DAVID Says:

    LET’S SEE:

THE EARTH HAS BEEN ON A CONSISTENT COOLING TREND SINCE 1998 WHILE C02 LEVEL HAVE CONTINUED TO RISE AT AN ACCELLERATING RATE.

THE EARTH WAS WARMER THEN TODAY BOTH 1000 AND 2000 YEARS AGO (AND LIFE PERSISTED) IN THE ABSENCE OF SIGNIFICANT MAN GENERATED CO2 (MAYBE IT WAS ALL THOSE BUFFALO FARTS). THERE IS GOOD ARCHEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE THAT HUMANKIND BENEFITTED FROM GLOBAL WARMING AND SUFFERERED FROM GLOBAL COOLING.

ICE CORE DATA DEMONSTRATE THAT HISTORICALLY CO2 INCREASES FOLLOW WARMING TRENDS NOT LEAD THEM (THIS IS BECAUSE THE OCEANS ARE THE EARTHS LARGEST CO2 SINKS AND WARM WATERS CAN NOT HOLD AS MUCH DISOLVED GAS AS COLD WATER (REMEMBER THAT FROM H.S. PHYSICAL SCIENCE ??)

THERE IS NO, NO, GOT THAT, NO CAUSAL LINK THAT HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED BETWEEN INCREASED CO2 LEADING TO WARMER TEMPERATURES. CORRELATION IS NOT CAUSATION THAT IS AS BASIC TO STATISTAL/SCIENTIFIC DATA ANALYSIS AS IT GETS.

THERE IS A FAIRLY GOOD CAUSAL LINK BETWEEN SHORT AND LONG TERM CYCLES IN SOLAR OUTPUT WITH PATTERNS OF TEMPERATURE VARIATION ON EARTH.

    >650 CLIMATE/EARTH/PHYSICAL SCIENCE SCIENTISTS (Ph.D TYPES WHO HAVE PUBLISHED EXTENSIVELY IN THE PEER REVIEWED LITERATURE) INCLUDING FORMER IPCC AUTHORS ARE ON RECORD SAYING THE SCIENCE OF CO2 RELATED WARMING IF FAR FROM SETTLED AND LOOKING WEAKER EVERY MONTH.

WHERE IS YOUR REPORTING ON THAT? I AN NOT A DENIER I AM A STUDENT OF SCIENCE AND WHEN YOU TAKE THE TIME TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE THE EVIDENCE CO2 INDUCED WARMING IS DOUBTFUL AT BEST AND NON-SENSE AT WORST. CERTAINLY IT IS NOTHING TO ESTABLISH NATIONAL POLICY ON AND VERY CERTAINLY THERE IS NO CRISIS.

    DR. DAVE
