Why moan about competition? If the for-profit insurance industry can't compete, they should drop out of the race. Isn't the point of this whole exercise to obtain the best, most economical, most efficient and fairest health care for Americans? We simply do not need their for-profiteering.

It should be noted that HMO's were invented during the Nixon Administration. He and I believe Erlichman were on video and audio tape talking about one of their contributors who had this idea to start a company supplying health care. I think the quote overheard was "we can make a whole lot of money off this". So naturally the Republicans don't want Universal Health Care. They have too much of their own money in stocks of the big health insurers.

How about we all just get the healthcare that is provided to members of Congress? That seems fair.

Good point Megan, there's a lot of profit for the redundant middlemen in an E.R. visit followed by a long hospital stay, and they only have to cover part, say, 80%, which is why people are dissuaded from making those inexpensive preventative care visits in the first place. It ensures that insurance clerks stay in high demand and doctors stay at low availability, making the percentage those redundant middlemen insurance clerks can skim all that much more.

That’s why real competition is the key - it encourages innovation so that the health care treatments..

...can be withheld in order to help our shareholders get a fatter bottom line and preventative medicine just doesn't make any sense! Don't forget, with Republicans, your health and the health of your family is just another way for people to make a lot of money!

Republicans will lead the effort to make Americans work for sub par health care.

You expect me to believe insurance costs for a working population are higher than the over 65 segment?

I find that hard to believe from an experience standpoint, especially since something like half of health care costs occur in the last 6 months of life. (Don't take that as an exact figure, but an approximation)
