" ... but that has little to do with the total thermodynamic kinetic energy in and the temperature of the atmosphere."

Now there, is a contentless sentence.

The average (translational) energy of a gas (the kinetic energy of a gas) is proportional to exactly one thing: the absolute temperature of the gas, and that proportionality is the same for evergy gas.

Dear Brad Johnson,

I am wondering whether you understand what science means. Science has nothing to do with consensus. Let me quote the late Michael Crichton (October 23, 1942 – November 4, 2008): "There is no such thing as consensus science. If it's consensus, it isn't science. If it's science, it isn't consensus."

Do me a favor, take a look on the CO2-temperature diagram that can be found under http://www.gi.alaska.edu/~kramm/climate/co2_t.JPG . This diagram shows the temperature anomaly in Kelvin (K) with respect to the period 1961-1990. This temperature anomaly is based on the annual mean of the globally averaged near-surface temperature taken from the British MetOffice's Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research (HadCRUT3, http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climatechange/science/monitoring/hadcrut3.html). Also illustrated is the fitted atmospheric CO_2 concentration as shown in Figure 4 of Kramm et al. (2008, http://aps.arxiv.org/abs/0711.1551). This figure can also be found under http://www.gi.alaska.edu/~kramm/climate/Figure_4.jpg . As documented by the CO2-t diagram, one needs a strong faith to believe that the rise of the CO_2 concentration is responsible for the increase of the globally averaged near-surface temperature. With respect to this diagram, I may conclude that we are far from any kind of consensus.

People like former VP Al Gore and his "scientific" adviser James Hansen (NASA GISS) demand trading of emission rights, a carbon tax, etc. This demand is comparable with Johann Tetzel's selling of indulgences ("Sobald das Geld im Kasten klingt, die Seele (aus dem Fegefeuer) in den Himmel springt"). Tetzel's intention was not the salvation of one's soul, his intention was collecting money for building the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy. This selling of indulgences mainly provoked Martin Luther to write his Ninety-five Theses. It was the beginning of the protestant reformation and irreversibly damaged the power of the Roman Catholic Church. Perhaps, to debate global warming using political, but not scientific arguments will finally lead to a reformation of science.

Sincerely yours

Gerhard Kramm

Wow, thanks. This explains a lot. Earlier today, I stopped by Drudge where I haven't been in a while and felt I was entering a parallel but only vaguely recognizable universe, one that was imploding like a supernova (or Rumpelstiltskin). The President was destroying the nation, the people -- from high school kids to Street traders -- had no confidence in him, the stimulus bill was designed to help Obama's bil-lionaire friends, & Nancy Pelosi was going to hell.

Thanks to you, I've been able to return to the real world without wondering if I'd made it up. Turns out they're the crazy ones. Good work!

It turns out that big tobacco has been behind climate change denial along with the fossil fuels industry. This video from 1982 has the air of familiarity and shows how they try to engineer the ring of truth (but with bigger hair.)
