Obama Asks: ‘Are These Folks Serious?’

In a speech at the Department of Energy today, President Obama announced he was signing a memorandum to direct the department to issue new energy efficiency standards for common household appliances — something Secretary Steven Chu has highlighted in the past as a top priority. He also responded to critics who “ridiculed our notion that we should use part of the money to modernize the entire fleet of federal vehicles,” asking, “Are these folks serious?”

This is what they call “pork.” You know the truth. . . . So when you hear these attacks deriding something of such obvious importance as this, you have to ask yourself, “Are these folks serious?” Is there any wonder we haven’t had a real energy policy in this country?

Watch it:

Neo-Hooverite conservatives have attacked numerous efficiency initiatives in the recovery plan:

– $600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees

– $200 million in funding for the lease of alternative energy vehicles for use on military installations

– $5.5 million for “energy efficiency initiatives” at the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration

– $6 billion to turn federal buildings into “green” buildings

As President Obama explained, federal fleet modernization “will not only save the federal government significant money over time, it will not only create manufacturing jobs for folks who are making these cars, it will set a standard for private industry to match.” This is as true for the green building efforts and other efficiency initiatives. Speaking to an audience of Department of Energy scientists, he concluded:

For the last few years, I talked about these issues with Americans from one end of this country to another. Washington may not be ready to get serious about energy independence, but I am and so are you and so are the American people.

Inaction is not an option that’s acceptable to me and it’s certainly not acceptable to the American people, not on energy, not on the economy, not at this critical moment.

In Obama’s words, it’s time for Congress “to rise to this moment.”

Is “neo-Hooverite” fair on Hoover? When he had a big project to run – famine relief after WWI – he ran it with outstanding efficiency. His macroeconomic, regulatory and monetary policies as President were clueless and led straight to the Crash and the Depression. But were his budgets characterised by the contempt for average and poor Americans, and for common sense, shown by the current Republican attacks?

  2. professorj Says:

    James,

Your not Prejudiced against Republicans are you? Have you read the Stimulus bill James. I’m sure the Pork pleases you. Enjoy the evential result of this bill when your dollar is worthless and the people in Government are driving around in Hybrids you can’t afford but payed for.

Here’s a shocker for you James, the US Postal service are getting rid of their propane and alternative fuel trucks because of expensive repair costs and low productivity. You should see the repair costs of Hybrid cars on the road. No repair is cheap. Everything on them from the wiring to the propulsion system cost big bucks to repair. Liberals, Geeez. Blame the Republicans and close their eyes to the truth. I bet you blame Bush for the Housing Bubble burst also.

Obama, Obama, Obama, Obama. Walk on water. Not!

  3. professorj Says:

    jps.

Wait until you have to change the batteries in tow to three years or repair a wiring harness that has burned up. Or even change a fuse.

Go buy one. I recommend it for you. One note though, the electricity that is used to recharge those cars comes from Coal Fired Power Plants. Really, it does.

  4. luvmyhybrid Says:

You skeptics would rather save money and burn up the planet than spend a little more to try to make an impact. I don’t think you get it. If we do not drastically change things soon, it just won’t matter anymore.

And by the way, money — isn’t even real. It is a social construct. But the air we breathe, that’s real. The planet, that’s real, too. Who gives a f—k what it costs with our play money? If we have the capability, we just have to do it. Period.

  5. Bob Says:

Where were these serious folks when Bush was President? Bush is responsible for the mess we are in. Get real. Look at what he did with the economy. Didn’t he fart on Reaganomics?

  6. professorj Says:

    luvmyhybrid.

It’s nice that you drive a hybrid but if you think you hold the moral high ground because you do (and I think you do)you should consider what a wasteful process that is involved in manufacturing that symbol of yours. Again, another person who thinks that they are going to save the world. Don’t you get it. It’s a hoax perpetrated on you and you bought into it.

Your symbol doesn’t even save energy. It cost ten times the energy and pollution to manufacture that symbol and it won’t save the planet.

There is no such thing as “Man Made Global Warming”. It’s a hoax. Any global warming going on (and the temp of the planet has been falling for the past 10 years) would be caused by the Sun’s Solar activity. All the battery cars in the universe isn’t going to change that.

You go on living in that “I’m Better than you because I care about the planet attitude” if it makes you feel better. Me? I live in the real world.

  7. professorj Says:

Bob. I know you read the Liberal talking points every day and you hate George Bush but your anti Republican Bigotry is showing. It was Barney Frank and Chris Dodd that started this mess not Bush. He presented a bill that passed in the house in 2003 that would have avoided this mess but it was killed in the Senate by the Democrats. Barny Frank said that there was absolutely nothing wrong at Fanny and Freddie.

You don’t know anything about that though, do you? None of your liberal sources will tell you what really caused this problem. It got worse when you Liberals gained power in 2006. Two years you were in control and didn’t do anything. Now that’s really Bush’s fault and the Dems had nothing to do with it.
I’ll be around when you start blaming and complaining about Obama. I know your worshiping of this MAN (not Messiah) is running pretty high right now. Maybe he can just sign one of those Executive Orders and fix the world but he can’t.

Liberals. Your all alike. A great bunch of uninformed followers though, I have to give you that.

Hey I hear that Bin Laden is still loose, the war is still going on and the cells at Gitmo are still full.

  8. Beca Says:

professorj: clearly you are no professor! Man plays no responsibility for the very real and factual problem of global warming? Are you related to that actic idiot, Palin? Have you ever heard of the Ozone layer? Have you noticed that the ice in the actic is melting at break neck pace? (hmm, how could that be if the earth, as you put it, is getting colder?)You are an absolute moron! you are one of the Republican imbeciles that gets spoon fed lies and deceptions, and then you claim because they tell you you are superior to those of us who believe in this country and its civil liberties (Liberals).
Can you count how many days since January 20, 2009? Not even one month, and you are making this demand that “Bin Laden is still loose, the war is still going on and the cells at gitmo are still full.” as if to say what?
It seems to me that given your incredibly high expectations of President Obama, that you are the one who believes he is the messiah!.
Instead, you might want to look at it this way: after 8 long years of the Bush dictatorship, Bin Laden is still loose, a war that should have never happened is still going on, and Gitmo continues to hold people in captivity who haven’t even been charged with a crime let alone been tried or convicted of any crime.
You can’t turn all of Bush’s failures onto President Obama, it is not going to work! Perhaps with your bunch im might, but not with the rest of America, you know, the majority who elected President Obama.
People like you are what is wrong with this country! Ignorance is toxic! get an education!

Wind Energy will be an early test of Obama’s White House Staff

    Written by Glenn R. Schleede

President-elect Obama has said that he would promote “wind farms” as one way to create more jobs. This idea is consistent with popular wisdom about wind energy and, therefore, sounded good while Mr. Obama was in the Senate and during his presidential campaign.

The problem for Mr. Obama now is that this popular wisdom is wrong. Contrary to reports issued by various wind energy advocates, “wind farms” provide few energy, environmental, or economic benefits and create very few jobs – far fewer than could be achieved if the money was used for other investments. Also, wind energy has adverse impacts that advocates like to ignore.

A Glimpse Inside the Global Warming Controversy

    Written by William DiPuccio

“Do you believe in Global Warming?” I have often been asked this question by people with little or no scientific background. It seems like a simple question that demands a “yes” or “no” answer. But in reality it is a complex question that cannot be reduced to an unqualified “yea” or “nay”. The intent of this paper is not to resolve this question by rallying evidence for or against Global Warming (as if that can be done in a few pages!), but rather to lay bare the complexity of the climate change issue. Those who come to appreciate this fact will likely agree that simple answers are not only bad education, but can lead to bad policies.

Polar Bears, Climate Change, and Human Dignity

Written by Douglas Clark, Martina Tyrrell, Martha Dowsley, A. Lee Foote, Milton Freeman and Susan G. Clark

Polar bears are recognized worldwide as living symbols of the Arctic, and have recently become prominent symbols in international campaigns to combat global climate change. On May 14, 2008 a slightly different symbolic association was presented to the world. Against a backdrop of American flags and large photos of polar bears, the US Secretary of the Interior announced his government’s decision to list polar bears worldwide as a threatened species due to declining Arctic sea ice. Explicit in the same announcement was the current US administration’s clear determination to prevent this listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) from being used to regulate greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) or obstruct energy developments deemed vital to US interests.

Romm’s Fairy Tales – Where Cold is Warm

Written by Joseph D’Aleo, AMS Fellow, CCM

In another fable on Climate Progress, chief alarmist blogger Joseph Romm claims “The climate story of the decade is that the 2000s are on track to be nearly 0.2C warmer than the 1990s. And that temperature jump is especially worrisome since the 1990s were only 0.14C warmer than the 1980s (see datasets here). Global warming is accelerating, as predicted.

    “Wilder and wetter everywhere”

    Written by Christopher Monckton

The scare: The Guardian, one of the two UK newspapers most prone to write unverified and scientifically-inaccurate stories about the consequences of “global warming”, published an article on 10 December 2008, intended to influence delegates at the UN’s Poznan conference on the climate. The article listed a series of alleged climate catastrophes all round the world, saying that “millions … are feeling the force of a changing climate.

Reply to response to Dyck on polar bears and climate change in western Hudson Bay

    Written by M.G. Dyck, W. Soon, R.K. Baydack, D.R. Legates, S. Baliunas, T.F. Ball & L.O. Hancock

We address the three main issues raised by Stirling et al. [Stirling, I., Derocher, A.E., Gough, W.A., Rode, K., in press. Response to Dyck et al. (2007) on polar bears and climate change in western Hudson Bay. Ecol. Complexity]: (1) evidence of the role of climate warming in affecting the western Hudson Bay polar bear population, (2) responses to suggested importance of human–polar bear interactions, and (3) limitations on polar bear adaptation to projected climate change. We assert that our original paper did not provide any ‘‘alternative explanations [that] are largely unsupported by the data’’ or misrepresent the original claims by Stirling et al. [Stirling, I., Lunn, N.J., Iacozza, I., 1999. Long-term trends in the population ecology of polar bears in western Hudson Bay in relation to climate change. Arctic 52, 294– 306], Derocher et al. [Derocher, A.E., Lunn, N.J., Stirling, I., 2004. Polar bears in a warming climate. Integr. Comp. Biol. 44, 163–176], and other peer-approved papers authored by Stirling and colleagues. In sharp contrast, we show that the conclusion of Stirling et al. [Stirling, I., Derocher, A.E.,

Gough, W.A., Rode, K., in press. Response to Dyck et al. (2007) on polar bears and climate change in western Hudson Bay. Ecol. Complexity] – suggesting warming temperatures (and other related climatic changes) are the predominant determinant of polar bear population status, not only in western Hudson (WH) Bay but also for populations elsewhere in the Arctic – is unsupportable by the current scientific evidence.

Obama on the ‘urgency’ of combating ‘global warming’

    Written by Christopher Monkton

Obama’s World View on Energy and Climate

In a video shown at a costly, two-day “global warming” jamboree at the Beverly Hills Hotel, hosted by Governor Schwarzenegger of California in November 2008, Barack Obama said:

“Few challenges facing America and the world are more urgent than combating climate change. The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear. Sea levels are rising. Coastlines are shrinking. We’ve seen record drought, spreading famine, and storms that are growing stronger with each passing hurricane season. Climate change and our dependence on foreign oil, if left unaddressed, will continue to weaken our economy and threaten our national security.”

    Arizona Climate Change

    Wednesday, 10 December 2008

In February 2005, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, citing concerns of global climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, issued an Executive Order creating the Arizona Climate Change Advisory Group (CCAG). The CCAG was tasked with:

    • Establishing a baseline inventory and forecast of greenhouse gas emissions in Arizona, and,
    • Producing a Climate Action Plan with recommendations for reducing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The Action Plan developed by the CCAG was accepted by Governor Napolitano and in September 2006 another Executive Order was signed which established a statewide goal of reducing Arizona’s future greenhouse gas emissions to the 2000 emissions level by the year 2020, and to 50 percent below the 2000 level by 2040. A Climate Change Executive Committee was created to oversee implementation of the recommendations of the Climate Action Plan.
