Santorum's comments and the others noted are perfectly consistent with traditional middle-class American culture. As far as many--if not a clear majority--of white middle-class non-union Americans are concerned, unions are a criminal element, socially no different from The Mob or The Gangs or any unusual presence of male negros or "Mexicans" encountered in the street. Just another "Them," unpleasant types who for some reason, though "dying out," are still allowed to around causing trouble for decent folk.

One of the most simple and useful things the new administration and the Democratic majority could do for the country is to publicly support unions. Not just by defending them when they are overtly attacked and giving them the protection due under law, but by routinely speaking about them as legitimate members of society and legitimate political voices for the wage-earning middle class.
