Let me know if the defense acquisition guys have any problem getting plug-in iron mining equipment, please. Switching from coal, oil, and gas won't be easy, except for the part about saving so much money.

On second thought, that should be about ten terawatts wind and another 10 TW solar, assuming all the people burning coal and oil on other parts of the planet convert, too. I know the U.S. doesn't even need a single terawatt peak yet, but when we convert to plug-in hybrids we will need more, and we should use USAID to re-purposing our existing coal mining operations to a domestic steel industry and subsidize the installation of wind turbines internationally (or else tack all that metal on the trade deficit.) Nations like Russia and Saudi Arabia would rather see international climate change agreements fail, but that is because they would rather the U.S. give them all our money. This way we can displace fungible dirty coal and oil with electricity while regaining a manufacturing base. All we really need to manufacture is wind turbines, and plug in hybrid automobiles.

The U.S. produced 54 million metric tons of iron in 2006. China produced 520 million metric tons that year.

The General Electric 1.5-megawatt wind turbine tower itself weighs about 71 tons, so ten terawatts of wind power is less than China's annual iron production, and less than ten years of ours. But, if we increased our manufacturing base, it could be less than five years of ours.

Will Secretary Gates have staff please also draw up a contingency plan to have the Corps of Engineers with help from our new "recession and less war" recruiting drive to install 50 terawatts of wind power?
