The auto industry has been in collusion with the oil companies to keep demand for gasoline high by pushing SUVs on the public. They could easily have gotten set up to produce hybrids and electrics for today's market, but instead they showed incredible lack of vision.

The oil companies, on the other hand, just broke profit records once again - they'll be down this quarter, but they'll survive - while some biofuel companies have been forced into bankruptcy (VeraSun). The profit of gasoline relies on high demand - and just imagine the effect of plummeting demand in the U.S. on global oil prices.

Imagine if the U.S. stopped importing oil from anywhere... it will happen, one day, that's a definitive. Best to do it voluntarily and gradually, and set up the renewables beforehand, isn't it?

GOOD! I hope Waxman follows up and gives them reason to be scared. It's time those bastards are made to own up to their actions.

And yes, I am aware what I am asking for. Hope and responsibility to the future.
