Ah! Sanity makes a comeback! I agree with st. The only reason they are making this ruckus about the political movement by the House republicans is that they fear losing massively at the polls. ST makes clear the general public HATES this bill. And if the Democrats vote for the Paulson package over the objections of the House Republicans they will open an avenue of attack from McCain and the Republican's who voted against it. Am I saying the Republican version is any better. No. Like anything, the effects will only be realized once one version or another is passed. But unlike the Paulson plan, the House Republican's plan isn't running 100 to 1 against.

This article is completely disingenuous. Here is the simple truth. The democrats control the House and the Senate and the President will not veto the Bail Out Package. If the only dissent is from the House Republicans then there is no way the bill can be stopped. The grand standing by democrats is ludicrous. The House Republicans are essentially irrelevant. So the question is why are the democrats not going forward with this bogus bail out package? The answer is they know it is garbage and they fear the political backlash of a bill that is supported by less than 10% of Americans.

If there is a silver lining, it is that this mess has opened up the Republican Party and American conservatism to public view, revealing the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of that crowd. While the have mastered the arts of campaign organizing and media manipulation, they have neglected altogether the accumulation and presentation of tested, workable ideas. I don't know whether the lack of ideas led to the collection of deadwood on the Republican tickets, or whether the accumulation of deadwood crushed the fires of thought. But, it turns out that it does not do much good to have an AEI or Hoover Institute or a Cato Institute if your presenters lack the intellectual capacity to read, understand and present the ideas in comprehensible and politically palatable format.

Thanks.

Insurance companies don't let you buy homeowners when a hurricane hits the Gulf of Mexico, much less after it wipes out hundreds of miles of coastal communities.

Ten years ago, insurance would have been a viable option. Rich now, it's urine in the wind.

Mortgage backed securities already had "piece of mind" coverage, credit default swaps. They are incredibly expensive at the moment, thus no Wall Street credit is moving. Big money boys won't stomach pay day loan rates, thus the temper tantrum and planned bailout.

They don't trust each other, much less the small individual credit holder.

As for the Republicans other ideas, tax cuts and deregulation. It's known as Corporafornication. This is a clue folks.

It's time to toss the pimps from the CorporaWhorehouse. Reclaim the White House!
