That resulted in record profits for big oil, continuing a three year run. Americans drove 40 billion miles less. People drove 1.8% less in April and 3.7% fewer miles in May. What happened during that time? Oil companies increased profit (in three short months) anywhere from 11% to 31%. Fuel consumption in the past 12 months was the lowest since 2004-2005, according to the Energy Department. Contrast “Drill Now, Pay Less” with what happened the second quarter, “Drive Less, Pay More.” That resulted in record profits for big oil, continuing a three year run.
